"Feminism is Having a Wardrobe Malfunction" by Megan Rosalarian Gedris

I LOVE this cartoon...

I think feminism should be about allowing women to have the space and ability in society to do whatever they want to do in their life.

I do not think feminism should be about flip-flopping from women being expected to cook, clean and care for kids in the home and being judged for leaving the home to work to expecting women to work outside the home and judging them when they choose to stay at home. This applies to every choice a woman makes in her life -- her clothes, her career, family planning, etc.

If we combat societal expectations with more societal expectations, we are not solving the problem.

  1. I hate, hate, hate the perspective that says feminism "is" or "isn't" specific things. It's similar to when people proclaim themselves "Christians" or "Muslims" and use that as a springboard to determine what other people's values should be, even people of the same professed religion. Ironically, I also hate when people judge women for judging women, if that makes sense. This one requires an example I hate the comments on stories where women are oppressed or treated badly, and the response is "Women are the worst offenders. They (or we) are so mean to each other." As if that justifies poor treatment. Guess what? Guys are not always perfectly respectful of each other, either. But since they are allowed to be unique, diverse people, and women are the "other," we elect to make judgments about women as an entire group. We are all human. All subject to human frailty. And all pretty amazing.
