i have to drive 45 minutes
to an open field
to be alone with the mountains and the air.
because sometimes I begin to think that my life is defined by
my job
or
how many people I hung out with this week
or
how many college credits I have
or
how many likes my Facebook or Twitter or Instagram photo has gotten
or
the places I've traveled
or
how many views my blog has
or
what I'm wearing today
Sometimes I need to be alone
in an open field
away from the world
to remember that all of those things are simply things.
They aren't me.
Alone in an open field I can't hide.
Alone in an open field without my cell phone is when I truly feel free from the pushing and pressure of society and culture and expectations and people.
Alone in an open field is where I remember who I truly am.
This is such a wonderful post, Sydni! I think a lot of us think our lives are defined by those sorts of things, when they really shouldn't be. Thank you for such a powerful reminder.
ReplyDelete& I love that last photo of you! You're a beautiful person inside & out :)

thank you! :)
DeleteThe first picture is so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis is really beautiful. I used to be so afraid of being alone especially in public (and crowded) places because it makes me feel pathetic that I don't have anyone with me while almost everyone has their friends or family with them. Haha.
ReplyDeleteI kinda got over that though and I would love to go to different places alone in the future although I don't know how to drive or commute, and I also don't know any self-defense. I'm still afraid someone would hurt me or something. :(
By the way, I nominated you for the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award because you're one of the nicest people I know and I really love your blog. ♥ You can find the nomination on my blog:

Deletei TOTALLY understand being afraid to go out by yourself haha (http://astorybysydni.blogspot.com/2014/04/ecuador-archives-armed-robbery-story.html). going outside into nature is something that helps me a lot, but there are lots of other ways to recharge and get away from the world you could try out :)
thank you soooo much for your nomination! it means a lot to me!
What a beautiful and deep post dear. xx

DeleteGlorious post!
ReplyDeleteI firmly believe that the more I strive to define - the more I wind up negating my definitions. Thank you for the thought here x

DeleteYou're young and wise, for that you have my respect. I think it's great that you rediscover yourself every now and then, I wish more are like you. Maybe the world wouldn't be a bitter place if more are in your footstep.

You are such a wonderful writer! I love this so much. It's so easy to get so caught up in the world and I feel the most me and closest to Heavenly Father when I'm outside in nature away from it all. Thanks for the reminder--I haven't taken the time to do that in awhile! :)
ReplyDeletethanks for your sweet and honest words. it is soooo true. i think a huge part of my spiritual health is taking the time to be alone and feel the spirit. i hope you get an opportunity to appreciate nature this week! :)

DeleteBeautiful post! I used to worry so much about my old job, I would come home stressed out about it. I quit and have a new job and when I clock out I leave all my worries at my desk. Life is too short to be stressed out!

Deleteoh well you don't even know how right you are - with what you said about us being able to destroy and being able to build up worlds with words. and this post is just amazing, you know. less and less people know how to appreciate the pure beauty of nature and the pure beauty of just.. being alive, feeling, living. i am so glad you appreciate all that ♥ and i hope you never lose your smile, hope and joy in life :)
ReplyDeletethank you so much! that means a lot to me.
Deletelearning to appreciate the simplicity in life is something i have been striving to do for the past bit of time. i'm grateful you can see that!

ReplyDeletelove your blog as well :)
This is so great. It is really really easy to define ourselves in that way. But it is not who we are. Especially as a blogger and in the age of social media period. It is easy to get lost in that. Thank you for posting this I needed to read this today. XO -Alexandra
