mission prep: el chavo del 8

I am preparing for my mission

spiritually by reading my scriptures, prayering & going to church meetings.

physically by running, buying mish clothes & packing

culturally by practicing Spanish, talking to people from different Spanish-speaking backgrounds AAAANNNDDD...

El Chavo del 8

My super cool Puerto Rican friend introduced me to El Chavo del 8, a popular Mexican TV show that ran from 1972 -1980.

It was a Mexican sitcom, but it was popular all over South American, Spain and America. As my super cool Puerto Rican friend puts it: "You're not truly Hispanic if you don't know what El Chavo del 8 is."

Challenge accepted.

This counts as "mission prep", right?

stress

Sometimes it's finals week AND it's short-staffed in the ER...

....and no matter how hard you try to "have a good attitude" and not stress, you're really stressed....

And sometimes you want to just crawl into a ball and wait for everything to go away.

oscar wilde quotes

I have recently discovered that Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite literary human beings.

Here are some of his quotes that I love:

"The only difference between saints and sinners is that every saint has a past while every sinner has a future"

"No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist."

"There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it."

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

"Our ambition should be to rule ourselves, the true kingdom for each one of us; and true progress is to know more, and be more, and to do more."

My favorite quote by Oscar Wilde is one I try to live by:

"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

hot Puerto Quito days.

Today I am homesick for Ecuador.

I miss hot Puerto Quito days..

I even miss the day-to-day normal parts of just walking through town..

I miss green jungle in the background of every photo..

I miss having a little oasis five minutes away..

I miss the food..

I miss porch-sitting in this exact spot with my best friend, Betty..
